Mind your Automations: The Importance of Regular Checks and Analytics

Imagine spending hours crafting the perfect blog post, only to have it vanish into the void because your automation dropped the ball. Nightmare, right? Trust me, I’ve been there. Let's talk about why your automations deserve more than just a one-time setup—they need regular TLC.

We all know how crucial automation is in running a smooth and efficient business. It saves time, reduces repetitive tasks, and ensures that processes run like clockwork. But what happens when the clock stops ticking?

I recently faced a nightmare situation: my last two blog posts had zero traffic!

After some investigation, I discovered that my automation to notify subscribers wasn't turned on. Not only did my automation fail, but I also didn’t share the posts on social media. How could I expect my audience to know about the new content if I didn’t tell them?

This experience highlighted the importance of not just setting up automations but also regularly checking them to ensure they're functioning as expected. Here’s why you should be mindful of your automations and how tracking and reviewing analytics plays a critical role:

1. Regular Automation Check-Ups

Prevent Mishaps: Automations can sometimes fail due to system updates, changes in workflows, or simply human error. Regularly reviewing your automations can prevent these mishaps from affecting your business.

Test and Tweak: Don’t just set it and forget it! Testing your automations doesn’t have to be a huge time sink—run a quick check to ensure everything is firing correctly. Is your welcome email reaching new subscribers? Are your social media posts hitting the right platforms at the right times? Documenting these processes (aka SOPs) can save you time and headaches down the road, making it easier to troubleshoot if something goes awry.

2. The Role of Analytics

Track Performance: Analytics are your best friend when it comes to understanding how well your automations are performing. Regularly dive into your website and email metrics—low traffic or engagement could be waving a red flag that something’s off.

In my particular case, I would have known sooner about the issue with my blog if I had received reports with analytics - the easiest solution! You best believe analytics and reporting have become an immediate focus over here at CVA! You don't know what you don't know, and it's no ones fault, just things you learn (sometimes the hard way!).

Identify Trends: But don’t stop there; use this data to dig deeper. What times of day are your posts most effective? Which subject lines are getting the most opens? Analytics can provide the roadmap to fine-tuning your entire strategy, ensuring that your automations not only work but work brilliantly.

3. Communication is Key

Don't Rely Solely on Automation: Even the best automation can’t replace the power of personal touch. While it’s tempting to let the tech do all the work, there’s nothing like a well-timed, human-crafted post to get the buzz going.

Engage with Your Audience: I’ve found that manually sharing content on social media—even when it’s already automated—adds a layer of authenticity that my audience connects with. And don't forget to keep the conversation going: reply to comments, ask questions, and make your audience feel heard.

Automations are fantastic for streamlining processes, but they are not set-it-and-forget-it tools. Regularly reviewing and testing your automations, combined with tracking analytics, is essential to avoid missed opportunities. Remember, your audience won’t know about your amazing content unless you make sure your systems are working and you actively communicate with them. Proactivity today means avoiding costly mistakes tomorrow—and ensuring your content gets the spotlight it deserves.
